Artificial Intelligence: New Challenges and Approaches
The current EU AI Policy includes: building a large-scale AI computing infrastructure, with 19 AI Factories, 13 AI Factory Antennas, 7 AI Gigafactories; increasing access to high-quality data; promoting AI in strategic sectors; strengthening AI skills and talents; simplifying the implementation of the AI act. In this framework Greece installs the new DAIDALUS supercomputer, owned by GRNET, and runs the PHAROS AI Factory, coordinated by GRNET. The main target is to offer continuous support to requests from researchers, start-ups and small & medium-sized enterprises for the implementation of new generative and agentic AI models, systems and products. In this talk we will present the related recent developments, especially focusing on the healthcare domain and on the ways we will tackle the challenges and problems. The use of AI in healthcare is of great significance and new developments will be aligned with the evolving EU Health Data space. We will discuss issues related to the role of AI in dental diagnostics, with particular emphasis on diagnostic performance, quality, validation, bias, and explainability.

Stefanos Kollias
Stefanos Kollias has been Chairman of the Board of National Infrastructures for Research and Technology (GRNET) since 2019. He is Emeritus Professor in Machine Learning and AI in Electrical and Computer Engineering School, National Technical University Athens. He is IEEE Fellow, having produced world leading research in Machine & Deep Learning, AI and multimodal content analysis. He has published 300 papers in international journals and conferences, with 16500 citations and h-index 60 (Google Scholar). He has supervised 50 Ph.D. students, many of who are Academics in Greece, Europe and US. He has led his group participation in 100 European R&D projects, attracting funding of more than 20M Euro. He is member of the EC Expert Group on Cultural Heritage, advising in AI powered CH. He is also member of the Board of Directors of Michael Culture Association. He is coordinating the PHAROS AI Factory, with GRNET installing the Greek Daedalus Supercomputer.
